Among other things, the title of Summer Phoenix’s debut single as a solo artist, “Tiempo” (Spanish for “time”), refers to the vast span of time it took Phoenix to release the three-minute track: approximately eight years. Penned sometime between the ages of twelve and twenty, the lilting piano ballad—reminiscent of the gentle film scores of Alexandre Desplat—the song’s Boyhood-like inception preceded Summer’s stint in her big sister Rain’s band papercranes.
“The piece is at times up tempo and at times lulling, just like life which is made up of time,” the songwriter shares of the piece that contains nearly a decade of life in its minimalist composition.
