For most of us, 2020 has been a year of change—whether intentional or not. For Canadian songwriter Sean Nicholas Savage, this shift has meant ditching the layered sophistipop of his dense discography to instead pursue something a little more theatrical. Life Is Crazy, his forthcoming record for his longtime home of Arbutus Records, is immediately recognizable as a shift for the songwriter, as the tracks swap out his electronic instincts for dramatic piano and lush string arrangements.

“A Moment,” the second single from the record, is another intriguing look at the project, recalling the classical-piano detour of Spencer Krug’s Moonface project a few years back while maintaining Savage’s vocals which feel firmly planted in the ’80s. “A Moment” in particular is about “trying to convey one person’s lifetime and space on the spectrum of the whole human race, and how meaningful, turbulent, and universal that is,” he shares. Turbulent indeed.
