With the LA Phil’s Power to the People! festival ending earlier than planned due to COVID, it only makes sense that their ongoing SOUND/STAGE series would find room in its schedule to continue the event. Overseen by the Phil’s Creative Chair for Jazz Herbie Hancock, the project’s aim is to amplify the voices of Black artists through performances and conversations.

One such conversation, led by Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel, aims to answer the question: “What does an anthem for the 21st century sound like in today’s multi-cultural environment?” That talk will arrive alongside Dudamel and the LA Phil’s performance of Jessie Montgomery’s Banner, set to open the event. Meanwhile, the program will close with a vocal performance from Andra Day who will sing “Rise Up,” an unofficial anthem of the BLM movement.
