For over a decade now, Joe Wong’s name has come up in projects ranging from drumming credits on punk and math rock records by the likes of Marnie Stern, Parts & Labor, and Mary Timony, to composer credits on film and TV projects including Russian Doll and Master of None. But last month, Wong finally set out on his own to release his debut solo LP, if you could call it that—members of The Flaming Lips, that dog., The War on Drugs, and Shudder to Think (not to mention harpist Mary Lattimore and a 24-piece orchestra) all get a feature in the liner notes, with Timony racking up a producer credit.
Today Wong adds one more name to the project: his old friend Fred Armisen. “When I decided to make a video for ‘Nite Creatures,’ I thought Fred would be the ideal person to direct,” Wong shared in a press statement. “Because of his sense of narrative rhythm (we’re both drummers, after all), surrealist aesthetic, and ability to make creative decisions on the fly, he proved himself the perfect director, indeed.”
The video certainly is psychedelic, featuring Wong slowly meandering around an ornately decorated mansion as it slowly begins to come to life. “I love Joe’s album, so when he asked me to work on the video, I was like, yes!’ Armsien added. “The song is so sonically rich, I think it makes dreamy videos in everyone’s mind. I just wanted to try to match that feeling.”
