The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon is a strange show to wrap your head around. On the one hand, you’ve got a less-than-stellar host who loves to make every moment about him, but on the other hand, you’ve got The Roots as an excellent house band and a handful of really clever games to play with charming and willing celebrities. While the debate about Jimmy Fallon‘s legitimacy as The Tonight Show host will certainly rage on, last night’s special Super Bowl episode featured one of the best games that the new regime of the NBC tentpole has: lip-sync battles.
Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart (both on the show to promote their upcoming film Get Hard) stepped into the ring with Fallon last night, bringing their pop-star A-game performances with them. Hart put everything out on the field with his takes on John Legend and this year’s Super Bowl halftime star Katy Perry, but was severely out-shined by Fallon’s secret weapon (Drew Barrymore) and Ferrell’s sheer superstar magnitude. Ferrell put his heart and soul into Frozen‘s “Let It Go” and Beyoncé’s “Drunk In Love,” and even though there was no official winner crowned, deep down they all knew that Ferrell smoked them.
