It’s two great sounds that sound great together: Pulp singer Jarvis Cocker and dance-floor heroes Hot Chip, who’ve united for a brand new track, “Straight to the Morning.” If the song’s caffeinated strut leans toward the pop-tastic, the tune was originally penned for none other than Dua Lipa.
“‘Straight to the Morning’ is a disco anthem about going out, for a time when people really can’t, and it features our friend Jarvis Cocker urging us to go ‘straight through until the break of dawn,'” Hot Chip shared about the collaboration, sparked after the two entities were both on the same DJ bill at Paris’ legendary Les Bains-Douches. “Somehow he seems an unlikely figure in this all, and we like it that way.”
“This was the very last musical session I was involved in before lockdown,” Cocker revealed. “It felt very poignant to be singing a song about dancing all night long in a club whilst knowing it wouldn’t be possible to do such a thing for the foreseeable future. We danced around the studio quite a lot in the meantime though. It was fun to be a member of the Straight Through Crew for a day.”
The track arrives with a beautifully conceptual music video, which can be watched below. For collectors, the tune is also set for release on 10-inch vinyl alongside a Mighty Mouse remix and “Straight to the Morning” playing cards. It will arrive on January 15, and can be pre-ordered via Dom Mart right here.
