Steven Knight remembers. The writer behind such U.K. TV hits as Peaky Blinders and Taboo has revealed plans for a new series set in the heart of the 2 tone music scene of the early 1980s. The yet-to-be-titled project will focus on the scene that sprang up around bands like The Specials, The Beat, and The Selector during the time.

“This will be a project very close to my heart, since this is home territory geographically and personally,” Knight said in a press statement. “I grew up with this music and the people who loved it. It was a soundtrack that perfectly fitted the mood of the times, on the streets, in clubs and on the football terraces. Birmingham and Coventry were the places where Two Tone was born and we will chart its progress through the important years. The production team we are putting together will perfectly reflect the make up of the people who made Two Tone happen.”
The timing for such a show is good, as it follows the recent White Riot documentary, which chronicles the Rock Against Racism movement of the late ’70s that dovetailed right into the 2 tone scene. Michael Baxter, a fan of the movement, has assembled a solid primer from various documentary films on the matter, which you can check out below.
