While our “Neighborhoods” series has taken us to several remote corners of the continent, the latest episode returns us to the familiar streets of New York City, where Charlene Kaye—more widely known as KAYE—played a two-song set consisting of her own track “Conscious Control” as well as a guitar-assisted cover of Daniel Caesar’s “Get You.” Donning a Strand Bookstore sweatshirt and speaking to NYC’s artistic influence and neighborhood-like feel, KAYE launches into the title track from her new record, which shouts out the city she’s called home for over a decade.

Released last Friday, Conscious Control serves as Kaye’s first full-length after splitting from her band San Fermin last year. “I have never shared more of myself in a record,” she’s noted of the Nick Murphy–produced project. “It forced me to come to terms with my own thorniness and complexity as a woman—the knowledge that I am capable of harm, making mistakes, and loving myself regardless.” Watch her “Neighborhoods” sesh below.
