For many of us, our first experience with the cutting-edge music videos of directors like Chris Cunningham, Michel Gondry, and Spike Jonze was a memorable one, revealing the extent to which the medium inspires creativity. It was Jonze who LA rockers Warbly Jets—who’ve recently stripped back down to the duo of Samuel Shea and Julien O’Neill—felt inspired by, injecting that sense of experimentation into the innovative video for their latest single, the funky, riff-heavy “Low Resolution.”
“One of my favorite music videos of all time is the video for ‘Drop’ by The Pharcyde,” Shea says of the video, which sees the band traversing LA through a series of creative camera effects. “It’s all performed in reverse and then flipped back to sync with the song in a really cool and unnatural way, which was extremely cutting edge to me when I first saw it as a kid. I always assumed it was shot in lower Manhattan or something, but recently realized it was shot in LA in the alleyway at St. Vincent Court—which is exactly where [the duo’s studio]] Ultrasound is. Because of that, I knew we had to shoot something there to pay homage to that video. ‘Low Resolution’ seemed like the perfect opportunity.”
