Jimkata is a three-piece synth group made up of middle school friends Evan Friedell, Aaron Gorsch, and Packy Lunn that’s a bit proggy, a bit psychedelic, and a bit funky. Their latest single “Hard Headed” is the perfect blend of all those influences as lead singer Evan Friedell sings about overcoming unfamiliar obstacles. The track starts off slow and ominous as Friedell sings about fighting in the midst of war. However, during the chorus, where playful synths perk up like wilted flowers, the thought of loved ones keeps him going. “Well I’m hard headed / When the reaper is calling my name / And I won’t let him take me,” he sings.

Friedell explains the inspiration behind the track: “We purposely went with a more stripped back approach to recording and tracked the bulk of the song as a live in studio performance as opposed to piecing it together as we often do with our more electronic influenced songs. We wanted to create a subtly spacey, psychedelic setting to make room for the tale being told in the lyrics; a tale of the vulnerable moment where you have to find the strength to persevere through strange and difficult times.”

“Hard Headed” comes with a retro, analog-video visualizer created by lighting designer and visual artist Greg Ellis. Check it out below.
