Sophia Allison, better known as Soccer Mommy, released an excellent album last year called Color Theory, and we chatted with her about music and how she was holding up at the beginning of the pandemic. Since then, she’s released some demos from that album, along with remixes by Actress and Unknown Mortal Orchestra.

Today, she’s sharing a cover of The Chicks’ classic “Wide Open Spaces” that she recorded a few years ago. It’s the title track from the country trio’s 1998 album. Allison’s version is a bit less twangy, with the guitar more in the background and a fiddle part missing. Her voice is more hushed than The Chicks’ lead singer Natalie Maine’s, but all in all, Soccer Mommy stays true to the liberating, pastoral song.

Hear her version below.
