“From These Heights,” the latest single from 21-year-old musician Jelani Aryeh is a catchy, existential release. Over a thumping bass drum and snare combo and glowing distortion that recedes into the background, Aryeh joins the roster of young musicians like Yuno and Goth Babe that combine noise rock’s urgency and captivating dream-pop melodies. “From These Heights” is the newest single from the singer’s forthcoming debut album I’ve Got Some Living To Do.
He said of the track, “I wrote this song around the time when George Floyd was killed, there were wildfires everywhere, and it genuinely felt like the world was coming to an end. It was a chaotic time and everything felt like it was in flux. I think that made me want to escape reality a bit.” Today, Aryeh shares the song’s music video that captures him running from the flames. Scenes of Aryeh running in a field are cut between footage of him wandering around a house, furniture draped in white cloth, searching for a place to rest his feet.
“It’s been a goal of mine to make a video for each single on the album. With ‘From These Heights’ we wanted to put emphasis on the lyrics and capture its feeling with an intense performance-based video,” Jelani continued. “To achieve that [director Will Noyce] really just kept it as simple as possible, with the majority of shots being just me delivering the message confined to a draped room. It’s designed so you have no option but to feel the weight of the words—I’m literally saying it to your face.”
