Sometimes love (or lust) at first sight can make us do some wild stuff. Up-and-coming musician/producer Spencer Miles Abraham Allen, who releases music simply as Spencer., captures this heart-gnawing desperation on his latest track “Lonely as I Ever Was.” The Brooklyn-based artist recently signed to 4AD and is releasing his debut album Are U Down? on September 10. For its lead single, Allen loses his pride and gets told that it wouldn’t work out in this lifetime. As a result, his tone is bittersweet, both wistful and silky, over punching percussion and a laidback bass. It recalls the experimental funk of Steve Lacy or Ravyn Lenae.

In the press release, Allen revealed that “‘Lonely as I Ever Was’ was the last song I wrote for my record, I even made the outro the same day. The theme of this one is basically from the song ‘Next Lifetime’ by Erykah Badu, and I even reference it in the lyrics. Kinda like being on the other side of her situation, begging someone in a relationship to consider a relationship with you.”

In the accompanying video, Spencer. lets his heart lead him into tricky, sometimes problematic situations. Ultimately, it gets him knocked out. Watch the events unfold below.
