A couple weeks ago, Liverpool’s Clinic dropped the track “Fine Dining,” and it seems it has a larger purpose. Today, they’ve announced their ninth album Fantasy Island, which is out in October on Domino, with the release of the title track. It’s an oddball disco standout. Here’s, uh, what the band said of the track: “Get out of your tree tonight with Clinic’s new electro-rockabilly shebang.” Honestly, amazing. “Fantasy Island” is a bit eerie, a bit funky, and every bit enigmatic. I can’t really explain to you the chills I got hearing the first few opening seconds; I’ll let you experience that yourself.
A follow-up to 2019’s Wheeltappers and Shunters, Fantasy Island was inspired by the idea of looking “to a brighter future.” The album includes nods to H.G. Wells’ Things to Come, Marshall McLuhan’s The Medium Is the Massage, and Richard Brautigan’s Sombrero Fallout. All surreal, experimental texts that I’m gonna dive into after this gets posted.
Listen to “Fantasy Island” below. Fantasy Island is out October 22.
