For the past couple years, Chicago-based artist and activist Ric Wilson has been dropping single after single. He’s ventured into a diverse number of sonic territories from funk to footwork to synth-pop, sometimes pumping himself up while at others focusing on necessary socio-political commentary—he’s down for a good party, while also calling out the fascists. What’s not to love about that? Today, he’s returned with another single called “blah blah blahs” that features Kièla Adira on the chorus.

Here, Wilson’s background is a suave house beat produced by Norbert Bueno (the two collaborated on last year’s “Fight Like Ida B and Marsha P”). “blah blah blahs” finds that balance of consciousness and pleasure that Wilson excels at. Life is too fucking short to fixate on all the bad shit, even though there is a lot of bullshit—why isn’t Trump a convicted felon yet? Why are so many young people dying? During one line, Wilson makes clear that among all the death and hate, the drama isn’t worth his time. By the chorus, he needs a good night with friends to balance it all out. “Pour the shots, shots, shots / Mute the blah, blah, blahs,” Adira sings airily.

In a comment about the single, Wilson said: “This song was inspired by when I was drinking out with some friends and some[one] said ‘fuck the blah blah blahs.’ It’s a lot of bad news going around and I’m just tryna focus on the good news.”
