Montreal musician Cedric Noel is releasing his album Hang Time on November 12, which follows the two LPs Noel dropped last year called Patterning and Nothing Forever, Everything. “In a sense I wrote this record for a teenage version of myself and hope that it reaches those who find themselves in similar situations that I was when writing the album,” Noel said of the new record.“I hope that this album can contribute to the reimagination of what is understood as ‘Black music’ and help remove the boundaries that term currently encompasses.”
Today, he’s shared the single “Dove” that features Brigitte Nagar, a.k.a. Common Holly. It’s a gentle folk tune built upon reverberating guitars and the braided vocals of Noel and Nagar. “I’ve tried to care about trivial things like love,” the two sing on the track’s opening line. “To waste away trivial things like love.” It’s simple, repetitive, and very comforting.
“‘Dove’ touches on the wanting of emotional intimacy and how hard it can sometimes be to get there, be that within friendships, family, or romantically,” explained Noel. “I think the narrator is singing the lyrics somewhat sarcastically while trying to understand their own emotional shortcomings with the people close to them.”
