Since her 2019 album On the Line, we’ve heard a good amount from singer-songwriter Jenny Lewis. She’s collaborated with rapper Serengeti and toured with Harry Styles—honestly, I would have thought that things had been great for Lewis over the past couple years. But now, because of her latest single “Puppy and a Truck,” we’ve learned that she’s been having a rough go of it!

“Forties are kicking my ass / And handing them to me in a margarita glass,” she sings in her new Jimmy Buffett mood. “I was infatuated with an older man / And then I dated a psychopath,” she reveals. During the chorus, she shares what got her through the last couple years of hell: “With a shot at good luck / I got a puppy and a truck.” Although this might not be the kind of wisdom you’d be expecting after a pandemic (or maybe it’s exactly what you’d expect, with everyone getting a pet during lockdown), Lewis exudes a charming, simplistic optimism. You gotta do what you gotta do to get through it. And for Lewis, it was a puppy and a truck.
