Young is not a new label. Formerly known as Young Turks, the label has launched some of the biggest names in music over the past 15 years, including FKA twigs, Sampha, Kamasi Washington, and The xx. The latter has released a short documentary today along with the launch of Young’s online archive called Young then, which additionally includes unseen material from Sampha, Jamie xx, Koreless, Caroline Polachek, and more.

“‘Young then’ thus allows the label and its artists, people, friends and collaborators to restore, remember and re-present items and memories that exist beyond the limits of what culture routinely records,” reads the press release. “Just because it didn’t appear on record, is not to say there’s not a story worth telling; and so ‘Young then’ aims to preserve and make visible that which is ordinarily lost.

The short film by Jamie-James Medina captures The xx’s shows at the NYC Armory in 2014. The trio played 25 performances that were “designed to test the perceptions of intimacy and scale.” The film finds The xx in a sunken white square preforming for 45 guests. A description reads that “the band and the audience faced each other as the ceiling rose and eventually fell away, revealing the 55,000 square foot Drill Hall in full—a vast, shapeless space, illustrated by smoke and projected light, creating a uniquely voyeuristic and deeply personal shared live experience.”  JAY-Z and Beyoncé are in attendance, along with Kanye and Kim.
