Since her 2020 EP A word becomes a sound, Kate Bollinger has kept busy. She’s currently touring with Real Estate and will join Faye Webster on the road later this year. She released her song “Shadows” several weeks ago and has now returned with another titled “Yards / Gardens.” The track, which comes with a fun Bonnie & Clyde–style video, also announces her signing to Ghostly International.

“Yards / Gardens” was written with guitarist Chris Lewis and John Trainum. It captures “feeling resistant to change, during a time when it felt like everything was changing,” Bollinger said. I mean, have you looked at the world, lately? I will probably have “Yards / Gardens” for months—maybe years—to come as a sonic salve for the chaos that’s constantly flaring outside my bedroom’s four walls. Bollinger has crafted a gnarly bedroom-pop remedy, assuring us with her gossamer vocals that we’re not alone in feeling uneasy.

“For ‘Yards / Gardens,’ Kate and I wanted to take the sonic spirit of the track and translate its feeling into the video instead of using the direct lyrical meaning,” the video’s director Mitch deQuilettes explained. “We wanted to give homage to ’60s and ’70s films such as Godard’s Pierrot le fou, Melville’s Le cercle rouge, and Altman’s The Long Goodbye. It was important to us to keep the piece campy and light, while keeping it grounded in realism.”
