Earlier this year, we helped LA duo Warbly Jets debut the music video for their single “Low Resolution,” which was largely inspired by the inventive visuals of Spike Jonze, specifically during his prolific run as a music video director throughout the ’90s. Eight months later and not only is that track finding a home on the group’s album MONSTERHOUSE, which drops today via Rebel Union Recordings, but Samuel Shea and Julien O’neill are sharing another music video for the album track “Let Go : Be Free,” which was heavily inspired by one of Jonze’s peers.
“Having a budget of zero is pretty challenging for making any music video complete, but sometimes those harsh limitations can be a great tool for fueling creativity,” O’neill explains, citing the scrappy inventiveness of Michel Gondry as an influence on this project. “We worked closely with our friend Danny DiMarchi to come up with a simple, bold concept we could achieve in just a day or two. He basically took on the whole project himself with a few helping hands from friends along the way. We knew we didn’t want to overextend ourselves on anything too grandiose, so we worked quickly to rely on our strengths and only used things we had access to immediately.”
The song itself is a synth-infused psych jam that recalls the cool casualness of The Dandy Warhols. “For me, it’s about embracing different sides of yourself,” O’neill adds about the track. “The subject matter in the lyrics is actually surprisingly dark when you look closely, but simply put it’s about letting go and not denying the feelings that compel you to be unique.”
