Last July, Omotola unveiled her debut single “ITMOI,” a darkly woozy alt-R&B track that recalls the future-looking experiments of Poliça. It may be no surprise, then, that the track was mixed by GRAMMY-winning producer Brian Joseph, who’s lent his talents to Bon Iver and several of its offshoots within the same Minnesota-based creative circle as Poliça sharing an agenda for pushing the boundaries of genre. “There’s a certain heaviness to the song, but then again it’s forward-moving and chantlike in the verses,” Omotola explained upon the track’s release. “It came from a darker period of time that produced really lovely fruit, which I'm grateful for.”
For her “Neighborhoods” performance, she adds an additional ominous layer to the track by filming the set in a dark corner of a backyard in Los Angeles—the moody lighting contrasting with the sounds of birds chirping on the soundtrack. Watch it below.
