We're taught from a young age to constantly look forward to the future. But somewhere amidst life's many obstacles, which often leave us face-down in the dirt, we lose track of the version of ourselves we think we want to become. "Hidden Perks," the latest single from Minneapolis-based quartet Palm Friends, realizes that maybe there's a past self that was taken for granted.

On the new track, Palm Friends frame one of life's frustrating contradictions with ease: Growth isn't always straightforward. Over Jon Lindquist's muddy drums, Jesse Pedersen's tangle of high-pitched guitar, and Will Bunton's brooding bass, Shawnna Stennes sings about losing course. "Hey, isn't that the way forward?" she asks, her voice low and edgy. Later, after getting derailed from her path, she takes a tumble, leans into the grass, and a sense of self comes back to her. "I taste my blood and I bounce back."

“‘Hidden Perks’ is about how I figured that as I got older I would become a better and better version of myself because I would learn more and learn more lessons,” says Stennes. “And I came to realize I was really admiring my former self and striving to be someone I was before.”

The single is the opener off their forthcoming EP The Delivery, which is out March 24. Listen to "Hidden Perks" below, and pre-order The Delivery here.
