It’s hard to believe we live in a time when something as sci-fi-sounding as “the Metaverse” is quickly becoming a reality (er, you know, a virtual one), and it’s even harder to believe how unbelievably disappointing that reality—as mediated by Zuckerberg’s powerfully bland visual sensibilities—has turned out to be. I much prefer the vision MAITA shares for this alternate reality in her new video for “Where Do You Go?,” which sees a couple donning headgear and transporting themselves to a land full of goofy monsters.

But the line “Where do you go when you’re not here?” has a deeper meaning, the project’s mastermind Maria Maita-Keppeler explains. “‘Where Do You Go?’ is about the yearning we feel to bridge every possible gap between ourselves and our romantic partners,” she shares. “Ultimately, I think trying to learn everything about another human being is a futile task and one that isn't necessarily good for a relationship. Still, this desire houses a rich bed of frustration, intensity, and passion, all of which I wanted to capture with this song.”

The buzzing guitars and catchy chorus—again, along with those monsters—may distract from the song’s depth, but director Luke Borsten’s concept for the visual feels prescient. “[He] crafted the idea of manipulating this 'elsewhere' within our minds that often accounts for disconnect between two people,” Maita-Keppeler adds. “The video finds a couple confronting their own personal demons within their dreams, in the end allowing them to bridge that emotional gap. I loved getting to see Borsten's interpretation of the song."
