Last year Small Black announced their triumphant return with Cheap Dreams, the Brooklyn-based chillwave pioneers’ first album since 2015. With that LP nearing its one-year anniversary, the group—currently mid-tour with 100% Electronica labelmate Caroline Loveglow—is sharing a music video for one of the most personal songs on the new album. “When ‘Nobody Loves You’ first leaked onto YouTube, the first comment said, ‘I feel personally attacked by this song,’ and I felt it was already a success,” the band’s Josh Kolenik shares. “The lyric of the song is from the perspective of someone reflecting on what went wrong in a relationship and if it was ever fixable in the first place.”

In spite of the song’s title, the clip follows a seemingly innocent B&E situation as it progresses into a motel getaway for a young couple seemingly at the onset of a romantic relationship. “Director Ian Barling found us over the summer after hearing the track and pitched a piece he’d been working on that featured actress Kristine Froseth roaming around houses and hotels in New Jersey, in search of love and a dog,” Kolenik adds. “It seemed to match the hook immediately and helped reinforce the narrative of the track.”
