Like everything Björk does, her video for “Lionsong” (the first video from Vulnicura) is a provocative and challenging exploration of the singer’s psyche. Directed by longtime collaborators Inez and Vinoodh, the video (which premiered last week via Noisey) has Björk clad in black latex and synthetic tendrils, her limbs distorted to almost alien proportions.
A disembodied chest trapped in black film pulsates with a frantic heartbeat, an apropos image for a song about the complexities of heartbreak (“Maybe he will come out of this loving me / Maybe he won’t / I’m not taming no animal”).
Of the video, the directors said Björk is “seen as if under a microscope, baring her heart while luring us inside the bloody galaxy of her own wound.” Clearly she has no qualms about baring her wounds in a way that’s both artistically subtle and visceral.
