Travis Egedy—as always—has plenty going on beyond his longstanding musical outfit Pictureplane. This weekend he’ll be opening his art show Ultraviolet Mythology, a mixed-media collection mostly comprised of paintings and screenprints, in Chicago, where he’ll also be unveiling his new book of artwork, poems, and lyrics (oh, and spells) he’s produced over the past decade titled Together We Make the Dream Real. But while we’re less than a year removed from his last LP Dopamine, Egedy is also already releasing more music today with the new single “Burning Chrome.”
Made in collaboration with GothBoiClique’s Yawns (who also made an appearance on Dopamine), the track is an homage to godfather-of-cyperpunk William Gibson—both in its subject matter and its soundtrack-to-an-’80s-film’s-conception-of-the-year-2022 synthy instrumentation, which matches perfectly with the post-punk bassline laid down by Yawns. “We were actually trying to make a song to send to Yung Lean, who had asked me to send him a ‘darkwave’ beat,” Egedy shares. “Lean passed on what we sent him, so I recorded all new synth parts and turned it on to a totally different song, which became ‘Burning Chrome.’ I love Yawns’ work ethic and his great sense of melody, and I hope we can create more music together!”
Check out the track below via its music video rife with Betamax-and-graveyards imagery familiar to the Pictureplane aesthetic, with recognizable clips of ’80s classics like Raiders of the Lost Ark and They Live sprinkled in. You can also register for Ultraviolet Mythology here.
