Yesterday, London rockers Puppy unleashed the latest cut from their forthcoming record Pure Evil with “My Offer,” an energized take on stoner metal that packs plenty of punch into its comparatively brief two minutes. “The mission statement for our new album Pure Evil was to reach into every corner of our musical interests and put together something that felt free and fun,” the band share of the track, which manages a playful energy without crossing over into pastiche or irony. “‘My Offer’ is (hopefully) both of those things and a pretty rare instance of us pushing the tempo up a bit. In true Puppy fashion, however, we had to throw the nastiest, sludgiest riff on the record in there halfway through just to stop things getting too stale.”
Today they’re unveiling a visual which, in accordance with the album title, is, in fact, pure evil. The clip syncs the band’s scuzzy clamor with images of Hieronymous Bosch’s most famous paintings digitally altered by an iPhone app commonly used on TikTok which allowed the band to make it appear as if the deeply cursed figures within Bosch’s artwork are, further cursedly, singing along to the track.
“The Last Judgement and The Garden of Earthly Delights are two triptychs which juxtapose fantastic images of divine purity and grandeur with some of the most nightmarish and grotesque visuals ever painted,” the band continues. “Idealised visions of pastel purity and edenic excess rub up against strange, bestial creatures which torture one another amidst hellish tableaus. It all feels very heavy-metal somehow. We figured that if anything could make these eerie creatures more surreal and unnerving, having them sing along to the latest Puppy track might be a good place to start.”
