There are plenty of opinions going around lately about whether or not our recent nu metal revival is a good thing or very much not, though what gets talked about less—either because it’s much less polarizing or because Travis Barker has yet to co-sign it—is a return to the fusion of grunge and shoegaze which bands like Hum, Failure, and Far ushered in while Slipknot was beginning to get recognized for doing their nasty thing.

On their new track “Mush,” Bloomington-based group Jacky Boy provide a compelling entry to the canon of new music recreating this moment. Boasting auxiliary members of Angel Du$t, Hovvdy, and Mike Adams at His Honest Weight, the trio’s sound is considerably heavier than any of these outfits, with the title track from their forthcoming LP striking an undeniable balance between heavy riffs and instant catchiness.

“‘Mush’ is a personal favorite from the record—it just feels like a real success,” shares the band’s Zac Canale. “It’s this big, swirly, fuzzy, melodic, fleeting monster of a track that came together organically. It’s a keystone to the album, which is why it had to be the title track.”

Hear it below, and anticipate Mush out this Friday—pre-order it here.
