If you’re familiar with the graveyard-set post-punk of Death Bells and the raging hardcore punk of Fury, you may have some concept of the unique Venn diagram in which Object of Affection resides. The group not only boasts members of both bands—among others embedded in LA’s hardcore scene—but also possesses elements of both groups’ respective genres, all tied together on the band’s latest single “Through and Through” with a cleaner vocal track, maudlin guitars, and a literal trash can lid embedded in the percussive mix. The result lands somewhere between a clear reverence for The Jesus and Mary Chain and the innovation of contemporary peers like fellow Angeleno punks SPICE.

“‘Through and Through’ is a story about the challenges of commitment,” vocalist Colin Knight shares. “A compromise to your own convictions for the destination of devotion could kill you if you let it. It’s difficult to survive, so we abandon love quickly and often. We take cues from the minimalism of our idols and translate some of this raw emotion to the 8-track and mix it ourselves in our bedroom. We later recruited the almighty Maurizio Baggio for mastering duties as we have done in the past. If you are partial to maudlin guitar choruses bookended by an actual trash can lid cymbal, please give our new single a listen.”

Watch the Jai Love–directed video for the track below, which sees the band performing the track through obscure lighting and glitchy post-production techniques, and stream/purchase the single here.
