When you spend the first two decades of your life settled in a single geographic region, it’s only natural that questions of what your life would look like elsewhere would arise—as well as questions of who in your life would be committed enough to uproot themselves to join you. This is the theme of LA-based songwriter Kristiane’s newly announced EP State Lines, with the second single and title track providing a thesis statement of sorts for the release. Buried under catchy pop hooks and fuzzy textures lies the question at the heart of the project: Who would follow you across state lines?
“‘State Lines” is the anthem to my early twenties and all the confusion, pain, and bliss that accompany it,” Kristiane shares. “Having grown up and stayed in Los Angeles for college, I had never experienced geographic change that I’d always yearned for. While living here is a complete blessing, I found myself dreaming about a life beyond what I know. ‘State Lines’ discusses this need for change, while recognizing the beauty of the life and love I’d be leaving behind. It also questions the lengths somebody would go to love me—would they ‘follow me across state lines,’ in both a metaphorical and literal sense, to keep me in their life? I find empowerment in the subtle confidence and honesty of this song.”
Accompanying the track is a Crossroads-esque music video blending a full-band live performance with road movie imagery of a group of friends presumably making an exodus from Southern California. Check it out below.
