Four Wheels and the Truth is the type of album you’d expect to hear from a musician who’s been touring relentlessly for the past decade—a recalibration with reality likely bolstered by two years of quarantine-inspired self-reflection. This latest record from Blue Broderick’s Diners project is a more introspective and patient album than Leisure World, which dropped a month into the pandemic, with Broderick examining everything from life on the road to her place in the world as a trans person.
The latest sample of the record, “Half Glass,” opens with Broderick’s Lomelda-like delivery before expanding to introduce backing vocals and additional layers of guitar before closing with a shredding solo. “Lyrically, the song isn't trying to tell a story, it’s more so describing a collage of images that remind me of how I practice centering myself, how I see myself in the world, and how I practice patience,” she shares. “The song isn't trying to give advice either, I really just wrote the song to connect with myself. Musically, it’s got a lot of repetition that slowly builds up to a ripping guitar solo that was performed by my cousin, Christian, who was a major influence on the way I grew up with music. It feels special to have family on my recording!”
