The name Charlie Reed is a bit of a misnomer for the Chicago indie rock band made up of local musician mainstays rather than, uh, any one person named Charlie Reed. Spearheaded by Luke Trimble, the supergroup features Twin Peaks’ Colin Croom on guitar and pedal steel, Divino Niño’s Justin Vittori on guitar, Nick Beaudoin on bass, Nolan Chin on piano and organ, Tyler Bixby on drums, and Nora Chin on backing vocals. Their debut album Eddy is out July 21 on Earth Libraries, and today we're sharing the lush single "Holding On" that's built on a blunt, weighted acoustic guitar and a vibrant arrangement of strings, bongos, and steel pedal.

"This song was definitely a product of a breakup," Trimble says. "I felt I had been carrying the weight of a past relationship for months and wanted some relief. Pretty simple idea but almost visceral. I had to get it out." He adds about the writing process: "I realize that writing and performing it were and are a part of healing and a form of catharsis. Sometimes writing a song is like crying. You don’t have to be intentional, it's just something you need to do."
