Another fiscal quarter, another Guided by Voices album. Their second so far this year, Tremblers and Goggles by Rank will arrive this Friday, but ahead of its release date the band is sharing one more single called “Lizard on the Red Brick Wall” which doubles down on the sharp post-punk sounds of preceding pre-album cuts and adding elements of heavy-psych to the record’s already-unique flavors among the band’s incredibly dense catalog. “'Lizard on the Red Brick Wall,' the relentless opener on our new album, combines pounding rock, electronic sounds, and melodic vocals with creative production choices and a pulsating synth track played by both Mark Shue and I," guitarist Doug Gillard revealed about the track.
The single also arrives with a video created by Aaron Dunkel, who also worked with the group on the visual for last year’s “Dance of Gurus.” The new video replicates that structure of live performance intercut with a seemingly endless barrage of quick-cut imagery pulled from what look like comics books, ads, and trailers for B-movies rooted in the ’50s (not to mention a few scenes of Godzilla-like creature features alluding to the song’s lyrics).
