Just under two years since the West Coast duo of Nicole Rowe and Omar Akrouche released their five-years-in-the-making self-produced debut album as Worthitpurchase, they’re already back with their sophomore album Truthtelling, set to drop at the beginning of August. Expanded into a three-piece with the addition of longtime collaborator Eric Van Thyne, the new collection of songs, as heard on the first three singles, expands the experimental sounds of the band’s past without veering too far from their core palette.

Today we’re getting another new single ahead of Truthtelling’s release next Friday with “Deadbeat” pairing acoustic guitar and electronic production with Rowe’s wistful vocals in a way that brings to mind fellow West Coast experimentalist IAN SWEET. “‘Deadbeat’ is a stream-of-consciousness song I wrote in the winter about growing up in the suburbs and hanging out in the parking lots of random shopping centers in high school,” Rowe shares, shedding light on the song’s nostalgic feel. “I would always have an itch to go out and do something, even if there was really nothing for me to do. Spending a lot of time listening to music and driving on the freeway, going to desolate parks and being afraid to go to coffee shops alone because the whole experience was for some reason intimidating.”

The band is also sharing a remix of the track courtesy of their friend Chloe Corley which further scrambles the recording’s sonic reference points. “‘Deadbeat’ started as an Ableton session that me and Nicole were sending back and forth,” Akrouche explains. “It felt really natural to just send the finished session to Chloe and let them do their thing. We looove the drum break at the end—what a classic.”
