Although Kubrick is the filmmaker invoked on Ivory Coast–born songwriter Snny’s new single “Model Home,” that track and the debut album it arrives ahead of were more inspired by Richard Linklater’s epic experiment Boyhood, with the movie’s patient, decade-long filming and the familial legacy it covers inspiring the stories tied to Snny’s own family tree which populate the record. Arriving September 16 via Alda Music, Water Is Styled Honey is preceded by a smooth-R&B by way of downtempo-hip-hop lead single with Topaz Jones hopping on the track to help lay the roots for a project speculating on branches of Snny’s family tree he never got the chance to observe.

“Family, love, and growth are themes that really haunted me as soon as we laid down the chords on this one,” he shares. “For some reason I just kept picturing my entire family tree and the stories I never got to hear from the grandparents that passed away before my birth. It feels like a generational gap that my parents bear the responsibility of bridging. It’s a burden I can imagine feels more impossible having immigrated to an entirely different land and culture. I really wanted to tap into those feelings and this idea of finding love through that and starting a new branch of the family, while still rooted in the soil that makes up our lineage.
