It's been three years since the murder of Los Angeles rapper and community activist Nipsey Hussle, but we continue to honor and celebrate his name and legacy. Yesterday, on what would have been his 37th birthday, Nipsey's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame was unveiled. Hussle's name takes the 2,729th star on the Walk of Fame for recording.
August 15 was also announced by Los Angeles City Councilman Marqueece Harris-Dawson to be the official Nipsey Hussle Day in LA. Speeches were given by Hussle's partner Lauren London, his sister Samantha Smith, his father Dawit Asghedom, and his grandmother Margaret Boutte. Other celebrity friends in attendance included rappers YG, Saweetie and Roddy Ricch, radio personality Big Boy, and NBA stars Russell Westbrook and Isaiah Thomas.
Last week also saw Los Angeles Metro recognize Hussle by dedicating its new Hyde Park K Line Station in his honor. “After he caught the vision and he understood what the train would mean to this community and his neighborhood and businesses like his, he got very involved in making sure that this train worked on behalf of our people," said Harris-Dawson, "and he helped us express and live out our possibilities and our hopes and our dreams.”
The full Walk of Fame ceremony was recorded, which you can find below, along with more photos from the festivities. You can also revisit our recent cover story on the late rapper's legacy here and purchase the special print issue here.
