Over the last month, we've been gearing up for the debut of the Portola Music Festival in San Francisco, hosting the Portola Radio Takeover every Saturday on FLOOD FM featuring special programming dedicated to the fest's expansive lineup. With most electronic music festivals focusing on style over substance, it's rare to find so many revered and diverse electronic-based artists on one schedule, from pop-leaning chart-toppers Flume and Charli XCX, to dance legends The Chemical Brothers and Fatboy Slim, to international trailblazers Arca and Peggy Gou, to local heroes DJ Shadow and Toro y Moi.
Created by Goldenvoice, the producers of Coachella, the festival took place on a massive footprint at Pier 80, overlooking a backdrop of giant ships, the bay, and views of downtown. While the music curation was impeccable, many complained of over-crowding and a general lack of attention to the overall festival experience, packing thousands of fans on to an endless stretch of concrete. We're hoping the festival can learn from their shortcomings and return even stronger next year.
FLOOD photographer Wilson Lee spent both days capturing images of many of the festival's stand-out performances. Check out highlights below.
