It’s a shame that the short-lived Welsh garage-punk group Joanna Gruesome are mostly remembered a decade later for their punning band name rather than their lo-fi take on noisy rock music, which got lost in the infinite scroll of the blog era alongside peers like one-time split-mates Perfect Pussy. While their two LPs are still very much out there and waiting to be discovered by new audiences, the band’s Owen “O” Williams and George “GN” Nichols are bringing plenty of that same energy to their new outfit The Tubs, who are announcing today that their debut album Dead Meat will be arriving January 27 via Trouble in Mind Records.

While the first taste of the new record hints at the buzzing punk sounds of that aforementioned project, it takes things in the slightly more traditional directions of post-punk and jangle pop between its sharp guitar interplay and its talky vocals. Meanwhile, the track lyrically alludes to another of Williams’ prior musical outlets. “This song’s inspired by an old band of mine, The Snivellers,” he shares. “It was fronted by Max Levy of Garden Centre and the concept was that he’d embody the archetypal Sniveller—i.e the pathetic, scheming, slimy, manservant forever backing slowly out of his master’s chambers. I wanted to write about how love can turn anyone into a Sniveller.”
