Earlier this year, OKC-based rapper Jabee released a consecutive pair of EPs titled Am and I respectively, together forming an open-ended question to be fleshed out and perhaps answered with those releases’ sequels—the first of which is being announced today. Good will arrive December 16 ahead of the rapper’s forthcoming LP Am I Good Enough, which is planned for 2023 and will collect these three EPs (and, of course, an unreleased fourth called Enough) into a single statement. “My last album came out in the middle of COVID, and I felt like I missed an opportunity to make a bigger impact,” he explains. “So I wanted to release something in four parts to spread out throughout the year.”
The news of the latest EP arrives with its first single, which, with the help of guest vocalist Scoopay, pays homage to the smart verses and smooth instrumentals of Mos Def and Talib Kweli’s iconic Black Star project—a tribute that was already in the works before the duo’s first album in over two decades was revealed earlier this year. “The hook was gonna be the line about Black Star, but I decided to switch it when their album came out, and changed the direction of the song from a letter to Black Star, to [being] inspired by Black Star,” he shares. “I had my homie Scoopay do a hook and it fit perfect.”
“We just wanna hear another Black Star album,” the emcee deadpans midway through the track over the type of beat that attracted Boldy James and Blu to record verses elsewhere on the EP. Check out the song below.
