It’s a tall task unseating the reigning champion of indietronica ballads about changing seasons, but Denmark’s Lowly are up for it. The latest single from their forthcoming third album as a unit, Keep Up the Good Work, “Seasons” matches the drama of Future Islands’ landmark single, instead subtly building upon itself over the course of the track’s four minutes as new layers alter the course of the song both instrumentally and lyrically. “The song starts out minimalistic and simple but grows over time into more and more layers, giving the listener a feeling of being thrown in a rocket into space towards the sun,” the band explains.

Meanwhile, the track’s lyrics venture into the mythic realm, as the opening lines personify the sun before shifting perspectives midway through. “‘Seasons’ originates from a poem about the sun dragging the seasons over its shoulders as if it were a normal day job, coincidentally influencing all life surrounding it,” the group adds. “And as the song progresses and the chorus hits, it turns into an abstract storytelling from a human perspective about time and life’s drifting by.”

Check out the “Season” below, and expect Keep Up the Good Work to arrive February 17 via Bella Union.
