Depeche Mode has generated plenty of interest lately, even beyond the fact that their icy take on synthwave has become an influence on a new wave of artists. We were lucky enough to sit with both Dave Gahan and Martin Gore recently to discuss both members’ solo projects, while on a more tragic note the group’s bandmate Andrew “Fletch” Fletcher passed away the following year. It wasn’t long after that Gahan and Gore revealed they’d be pushing on with a new album titled Memento Mori and a summer 2023 tour.
Today they’re making good on that promise with the reveal that their 15th album will arrive March 24 via Columbia Records, sharing “Ghosts Again” as the gothic lead single. In true DM fashion it ebbs and flows through beauty and tragedy, ecstasy and existentialism over its four-minute runtime. “To me, ‘Ghosts Again’ just captures this perfect balance of melancholy and joy,” Gahan shared in a press release. Added Gore: “It’s not often that we record a song that I just don’t get sick of listening to—I’m excited to be able to share it.”
The track arrives with a sleek video directed by none other than Anton Corbijn, whose signature black-and-white imagery captures the now-duo engaged in a Seventh Seal–esque game of chess on a city rooftop. Watch it below, and check out their full list of tour dates here.
