Generally speaking, musicians launch solo careers to explore ideas that don’t particularly vibe with the music they’re making as a member of a band—something Delta Spirit’s Matthew Logan Vasquez likely experienced on his first three full-lengths under his own name. Yet on “Over It,” the first single announcing his latest solo release As All Get Out, he uses the space to process the frustrations of collaboration from the perspective of hindsight so detached from the incident that it nearly comes across as comical. “‘Over It’ was written after Delta Spirit’s last recording session in Vermont,” he explains. “There was a lot of misunderstanding and hurt feelings during the recording process. We’ve long since squashed all that and now this song is meant more as a reminder to not take myself too seriously.”

The music recalls the energized heartland rock Delta Spirit has long churned out, with Vasquez’s enlightened vocals leading the track’s catharsis. He claims that it’s this same sense of self-unseriousness which informs the track’s Barbara FG–directed video, which sees his son Thor (who also cameoed in Delta Spirit’s “Home Again” video, this time bribed into performance with the promise of a new Nintendo Switch game, Vasquez notes) lip syncing the tune with backing instrumentals from a middle-aged couple from their neighborhood.

Watch the video below, and catch Vasquez on tour at the stops listed here (no word on whether Thor and the neighbors will be filling out his live band). As All Get Out arrives April 7 via Nine Mile Records.
