If the two totems of backpack rap Aesop Rock and Lupe Fiasco joining forces for the first time wasn’t enough to convince you that ’00s heady skatepark anthems were about to have a resurgence, the debut single from VirgoTwins—the new collaborative project from rapper Gilead7 of Tomorrow Kings and underground producer Boricua Sandy—will take you back to the final days of Def Jux and the early days of Rhymesayers. “Unspoken,” featuring DJ Presyce of The Molemen, recalls the early output of underground rappers like Blueprint and Illogic, with Gilead7’s verses requiring you to listen to the track at half speed if you wanna try and keep up.
"This song is a sort of Masonic audio excursion into the esoteric as the ancestors visit us,” he shares, inviting you to bust out whichever dictionary you kept on hand when Temporary Forever dropped. “Or maybe stated differently (and perhaps more accurately), it concerns ancient ideas hidden by the very mechanism of sight and transmitted through the channels of Freemasonry and various clandestine societies of which both of my maternal and paternal grandfathers were part.” He adds that both grandparents imparted the message of the song to him through visions. “I believe what they said. I told Sandy, and she made music for me to tell you the little I can trust you with in the span of two verses.”
“Unspoken” is the first single from the duo’s debut album title ArtSpace, which is set to drop April 21 via Damn That Noise and Expanded-Art Records. Check out the Carinoe-directed video for the new track below.
