As hinted at with her debut EP LuvHz, Jackie Mendoza paints with incredibly broad strokes on her first full length Galaxia de Emociones. While the lyrical concept for the record addresses the boundless space our emotions chart, the musical influence similarly covers a commendable tract of influence while staying true to the sound Mendoza established with the help of Animal Collective producer Rusty Santos. Her latest single “Mousetrap,” for example, is a play on words which speaks to both its lyrical and instrumental focus. “I thought it was a fun play on words relating to the trap beats, but it painted an image in my head about how some relationships are like mazes and the breakup is a mousetrap,” Mendoza shares.

The twinkling, spacy ambiance of the song—to say nothing of its the bottomless chasm it seems to float above—takes influence from additional influences, she adds: “from experimental electronica, indie rock, and trap, to Broadway showtunes.” It’s a dense mix that lends itself to the creative visual directed by Artie Tamayo which pairs scenes of Mendoza picnicking with a Chuck E. Cheese–sized rodent and wandering the SoCal desert between animated sequences of a mouse making its way out of a maze to contentedly blast cig smoke into space. “The video was inspired by the ’90s MTV era,” she adds. “It’s charged with post-breakup angst like Alanis Morissette’s ‘You Oughta Know,’ over-the-top drone shots like the Slash guitar solo scene in ‘November Rain,’ and cartoon nostalgia.”
