Kosaya Gora—a meeting of the minds of producer/vocalist Kedr Livanskiy and producer/visual artist Flaty—has largely been billed as a folk-oriented project leading up to the release of their debut record Kosogor next month, though the first two singles they’ve shared take a number of interesting directions as alien to acoustic guitar–based songwriting as they are to their own house and IDM backgrounds. “Te Slova” introduced the duo as a Russian-language hypnagogic pop duo steeped in dark-folk ambiance relying on twanging electric guitar, while “Motorcyclists Die” took a uniquely dark approach to trip-hop while also proving a lethargic take on coldwave.
The album’s third single “Tell Me Dove” sees Livanskiy and Flaty peeking their heads above ground for the first time via a dewy folk ballad with an ethereal quality equal to its predecessors, but swapping gentle acoustic strums over spaced-out atmospherics for those tracks’ more ominously overcast sounds. The result is entirely pleasant if still far left-of-center, with storm clouds still visible on the horizon.
