It may seem ironic that Adeline Petricien’s debut album under the moniker Adi Oasis, rather than the one put out with her given name attached to it, serves as the Parisian-born and Brooklyn-based artist’s most focused outpouring of unfiltered personal songwriting. More in the spirit of her work fronting the playful nu-funk ensemble Escort, Lotus Glow is even a more collaborative effort than 2018’s Adeline, with guest spots from Jamila Woods, in-demand songwriter KIRBY, and several more artists embellishing the album’s 14 tracks.

Yet there’s a new level of self-confidence clearly achieved on these songs, which comes through both explicitly in the lyrics and implicitly in the songs’ radiant funk instrumentals. Both the album’s title and the new moniker point toward Adi Oasis achieving rebirth in a more idyllic mental climate permitting a more natural and unfiltered sound paired with lyrics venturing into territories more personal and political than anything she’s explored before. In short, she’s entering her “bad bitch” era.

Ahead of the release of Lotus Glow this Friday, Oasis took the time to craft a “Bad Bitch” playlist for us, highlighting collaborators, peers, and forebears who inspired her to push her music to the next level. From Chaka and Aretha to Ravyn Lenae and Danielle Ponder, check out her picks below.

Little Simz, “Gorilla”
My dream collab.

KIRBY, “Black Leaves”
KIRBY my funk sister, the embodiment of a Bad Bitch.

Khruangbin, “Savanne”
Because...female bass player! Shout out to Laura Lee.

SZA, “Kill Bill”
SZA is having such a huge moment right now! I had to put her on this list.

Chaka Khan, “A Woman in a Man’s World”
One of my favorite artists of all time. Title says it all.

Danielle Ponder, “So Long”
What a voice…

Arlo Parks, “Green Eyes”
The coolest.

Aretha Franklin, “Young, Gifted and Black”
If you haven’t heard her version yet, you’re welcome.

Ravyn Lenae, “Venom”
Love the beat of this track. So daring and fun.

Jamila Woods, “SULA (paperback)”
My sister. What a songwriter. I love that she paid homage to Toni Morrison.

Adi Oasis feat. KIRBY, “Adonis”
’Cause “you know you a bad bitch”!
