Earlier this year, Australia’s jazz-infused instrumental noise outfit Party Dozen (actually just comprised of two members: saxophonist Kirsty Tickle and drummer Jonathan Boulet) announced they’d be heading out on tour alongside Algiers in support of their most recent LP The Real Work, which they released last summer through Temporary Residence. While that album’s tracklist boasted a contribution from fellow Aussie Nick Cave, the one-off single they’re releasing today leading up to that tour features a heavy-hitter of the underground rap world in billy woods, who most recently appeared on the record Algiers dropped last week.
While technically a rework of the album track “Earthly Times,” the new version is no less dissonant, but instead restructured to better accommodate woods’ characteristically locked-in verse. “We’d sent over the original track to billy woods to see if it sparked any ideas,” the duo shares. “What he sent back was incredible. The pairing of his voice to this song was just meant to be. Once we had the vocal we reworked the structure to give the track some new life, adding in strings/piano and cutting in some of the previous unreleased takes from the original session.”
