The advent of the digital age has made famous people far less mysterious than they used to be. Before Twitter and Instagram we had two options to answer life’s greatest questions about superstar brawls: our imaginations, or MTV‘s Celebrity Deathmatch.

From 1998 to 2002, Celebrity Deathmatch creator Eric Fogel brought real and imagined famous feuds to life with all the unbridled and gratuitous violence afforded by stop-motion animation. Notable matchups included Eminem vs. Kid Rock, Jim Carrey vs. Mariah Carey, Madonna vs. Michael Jackson, and, of course, Hanson vs. the Spice Girls.

Now, after a brief return in 2006, MTV2 has announced that Celebrity Deathmatch is coming back to once again soak us in the red clay blood of celebrity avatars. Fogel will oversee the new version, which MTV said will be “reimagined for a social media world and hourly Twitter wars.”

No word yet on when the refurbished Celebrity Deathmatch will air, or whether Mark Kozelek will face off against Adam Granduciel.
