Back in 2020, Roz Raskin introduced their musical moniker NOVA ONE as a stylish distillation of Mod-era sounds and imagery with their debut album lovable, a memorable yet understated (well, relative to the bright orange beehive Raskin wore their hair in through the album’s press cycle) collection of tracks. Returning with their follow-up LP create myself later this week, Raskin continues to tone down the more flamboyant aspects of the project, with the new album serving as a more streamlined version of their sound, as introduced on the driving and immediately catchy early single “dangerous.”
Before the record drops on Friday, Raskin is sharing one last single in the form of “best/worst,” a more introspective track than its predecessors, built as it is upon a brooding bass line. Lyrically the track also looks inward—at least according to Raskin’s most recent interpretation of it. “Frequently when I write a song, it can feel like it’s about a specific feeling, person, or experience,” they share. “With this song I originally thought it was about one person, but now that I hear it back, I feel like I was writing about the internal battles I frequently have with myself. I love that songs can grow and evolve over time.”
