As David Cronenberg might say—if he’s a fan of industrial metal, that is—“Long live the new Godflesh.” Yesterday the industrial metal group released “Nero,” the first single from their forthcoming album Purge. The two-man project comprised of Justin K Broadrick and G. C. Green also confirmed that they’ll swing through the US from June 18 to July 2, playing gigs here after a handful of shows across Europe.
The news comes after Godflesh co-founder and ever-prolific experimental multi-instrumentalist Broadrick (a.k.a. jesu) announced early last month that Purge would be due June 9 on his own label Avalanche Recordings. “With the highly anticipated new album Purge, Godflesh revisits and updates the concepts of Pure (1992), as well as bringing a whole host of new dirges and laments,” the band said in a statement. “Amongst the many layers of dirt, Purge mangles 90s hip hop grooves and puts them through the Godflesh filter to create something futuristic in style—and utterly unique.” According to the announcement: “This is, and always has been, feel-bad music.”
The post also confirmed the band’s headlining appearance at Oblivion Access Festival in Austin on June 18, and alluded to a “mini tour” of the US, having since mapped out those additional dates.
As for “Nero,” the single arrived yesterday as an EP featuring the title track and three alternate versions. The proper tune and two said remixes are available for streaming, as well as in physical format limited to 1,000 copies also available. Both can be found on the group’s Bandcamp page.
